Safeguarding Statement

St Werburgh’s Catholic Primary school are committed to the safeguarding and wellbeing of every pupil. All our staff, governors and volunteers share this commitment.

Pupils are aware that they can talk to any member of staff if they have any concerns. All staff are trained in Safeguarding on an annual basis (including Prevent training) allowing staff to understand the signs that a child may be at risk of harm. We sometimes need to share information with external agencies about our pupils but where concerns are raised, discussions will take place with parents/carers first, unless we believe that this would be of detriment to the child’s welfare.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead is Mrs S Murphy (Headteacher) and we have three Deputy Safeguarding Leads – Mrs S Dakin (Deputy Headteacher), Miss E Burkey (Home School Support Worker) and Mrs C Singer (Year 2 Class Teacher).

Our nominated Governors for Safeguarding responsibilities are Mrs L Hawkins and Mr G Roberto.

In conjunction with Merseyside Police, St Werburgh’s Catholic Primary School is involved in an initiative called Operation Encompass. The purpose of Operation Encompass is to safeguard and support children and young people who have been involved in, heard, or witnessed a domestic abuse incident. Following such an incident, children can arrive at school distressed, upset, worried and unprepared. Operation Encompass aims to ensure that appropriate school staff (called key adults) are made aware early enough to support children and young people in a way that means they feel safe and included.

At St Werburgh’s Catholic Primary School our key adults are Sarah Murphy (headteacher and Designated Safeguarding Lead) and Emma Burkey (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead).
